Quand Internet permet de retrouver des amis lointains, parfois perdus depuis des années, comme sur FaceBook, par exemple, on se réjouit. Quand en plus il permet de nouer de nouvelles amitiés, on s’enthousiasme. Quand enfin il nous permet de créer à distance, on se dit qu’on a atteint un sommet qu’il sera difficile de surpasser.
Ma rencontre avec Annie Bacon s’est faite via SellaBand, à l’époque où l’on pouvait encore, par hasard, discuter avec des gens sur ce site d’autre chose que de stratégie, de promotion, de pub, mais encore de musique… J’ai découvert Annie Bacon grâce à Cris Tanzi… Une autre artiste dont je parlerai certainement un jour, puisque je l’adore aussi.
Annie m’a tout de suite demandé si je pouvais jeter une oreille sur l’une de ses compos, parce qu’elle pensait que je pourrais y apporter quelque chose. Déclic. Jafy, c’est une de ces rares chansons superbement mal enregistrées qui vous scotche à la première écoute. Ca a dû être la voix, mon humeur ce jour-là, et mon envie de me dire que j’avais découvert la fille d’Emmylou Harris… Mais tout y était : je VOULAIS créer avec cette fille.
Par contre, sur Jafy, blocage. Léger blocage. Comment apporter des 2ndes voix sur une chanson qui se suffit à elle-même avec une guitare et une chanteuse hors pair… Alors je me suis permis de lui envoyer juste une piste de guitare… Elle m’a par la suite dit qu’elle avait pris le temps de retravailler les paroles, et nos chemins se sont momentanément quittés… Juste le temps que je lui demande une faveur en retour.
J’avais cette chanson, Surrender, écrite dans un hôtel sordide à Slough, Angleterre. La chanson reflète légèrement mon malaise si vous voyez ce que je veux dire. Bref, c’est une composition acoustique, et folk, à consonnance Lennon. Je voulais qu’Annie m’aide sur les secondes voix ; je lui ai envoyé le mp3 avec quelques idées maladroites et le fichier sans les secondes voix. Le lendemain j’avais une prise de voix magnifique, divine, qui m’attendait sur mon mail.

When the Internet allows me to get in touch with long-gone friends, as it happens daily on FaceBook, I’m thrilled. I’m enthusiastic when it comes to meet new people that share the same interests, and I’m ecstatic when it comes to create music from faaaar away. Well, so far it has only happened once, but it was amazing.
I’m super happy to introduce you to Annie Bacon, whom I met on SellaBand, back in the days where we were able to speak about music, and not only about promotion, strategy, stuff like that… Cris Tanzi made me discover Annie. She probably doesn’t know it. I’ll write more stuff about Cris because I love her and she’s really an amazing artist. You should check her myspace out!
Well, I met Annie Bacon when she popped on my profile page and said « hi! I’d love to collaborate with you on one or two songs ». She sent me the song she was planning to share with me, Jafy, and I went crazy… It was like I was asked by Emmylou Harris to do some rhythm guitar for her. And so I did. The most interesting is that our way of interpreting our music is the same. Her vocals fit perfectly in my guitar playing, it’s really incredible.
When I was finished she told me she would certainly re-write the lyrics and re-do the vocals. I’m sharing this demo version with you guys so you can think about congratulating her for being « cold » on that recording session (amazing vocals).
I asked her for a favour in return, and she executed my demand brilliantly and in short notice. I had written Surrender in a dodgy hotel in Slough, England. The song had the vibe of the hotel all in it. Lennon had inspired me as well. I wanted the song to sound rough, acoustic. But I needed female vocals… So I asked Annie. Here is the final result. Let me know what you think of the 2 songs. Remember that if you’d like to have Surrender, all you have to do is ask. If you want Jafy, then run to Annie’s SellaBand page and ask her for it.
